EMNOTWENI CASINO CELEBRATES WOMEN’S MONTH IN STYLE WITH A LADIES GOLF DAY
Emnotweni Casino’s Ladies Golf Day – which was hosted for the first time on Friday, 6 August at the White River Golf Club – was a resounding success!
“We are extremely excited about the way things turned out at this very special celebration”, says Ig Olivier, complex general manager at Emnotweni Casino. “We’ve exceeded all our expectations and we are hoping to make this an annual institution.”
Emnotweni Casino wanted to make a small contribution to highlight the equality of women not only in Mpumalanga but also in South Africa and around the world! But, sadly women are still discriminated against in various countries and suffer unnecessarily due to ignorance.
When looking back, there are many significant women that played a major role in questioning women’s invisibility such as Carroll Smith-Rosenberg, one of the early women’s historians who remarked… “Without question, our first inspiration was political. Aroused by feminist charges of economic and political discrimination…we turned to our history to trace the origins of women’s second-class status.”
In the early 1900’s many working women of the National Women’s Trade Union League and other concerned groups participated in organizing strike activities in the United States. They protested against low wages, lack of protective legislation and the very poor working conditions to which women workers subjected.
A total of 28 women played in the tournament and the top four ball included Monja Richards, Margi Wood, Sanet Geare and Heidi Lawrence.
“At Emnotweni Casino, we are extremely proud of our female employees and will continue to support this wonderful celebration. The success of our Ladies Golf Day is a testament to this,” concludes Olivier.
The participants were treated for a wonderful evening at Emnotweni Casino and the official prize-giving ceremony was hosted at the casino’s Explorer’s restaurant. Well-known MC in the Lowveld, Dave Walters hosted the activities and everyone enjoyed themselves.
This was one day that will not be forgotten soon and aptly so. As Carrie Chapman Catt once said in a speech she made at the Senate hearing on woman’s suffrage, on February 13, 1900…”No written law has ever been more binding than unwritten custom supported by popular opinion.”
